Pick a name

Type your class list once and it stays on this device. Fair mode makes sure nobody gets called twice until everyone has had a turn.

How it works

Type or paste one name per line. The list saves itself as you type, so you can close the tab and come back to the same class. Press Pick a name and the winner lands in the middle of the screen, big enough to read from the back of the room.

Fullscreen hands the whole screen to the picker for a projector or a smartboard. The pick button stays on screen, the spacebar also picks, and Escape returns to the page.

Good to know

Fair mode is the point. Every name that gets picked moves to the "already picked" list and cannot come up again until the round ends. When the last name is drawn, everyone has had exactly one turn, the list clears itself, and the next round starts fresh. That is the difference between a picker that is random and a picker that is fair: pure randomness will happily call the same student four times in a row while three others are never called at all.

Pure random ignores the picked list. Use it when repeats are fine, like drawing a prize or picking a warm-up question. Switching modes never erases the picked list, so you can switch back and carry on with the same round.

Reset clears the round at any time. New class, new activity, or a group that came back after lunch: press Reset and everyone is back in the pool.

Duplicate names stay duplicated. Two students named Jordan are two separate entries, and fair mode gives each of them a turn. Blank lines are ignored and spare spaces are trimmed.

The list lives on this device only. Local storage is per browser and per device, so the class list you saved on the classroom computer will not appear on your laptop, and clearing your browsing data clears it.

Check for yourself that nothing is sent anywhere

You don't have to take our word for it. Every browser has a built-in panel that shows everything a page sends or receives over the internet. On a computer (this doesn't work on a phone):

  1. Press F12, or right-click anywhere on this page and choose Inspect.
  2. In the panel that opens, click the Network tab.
  3. Now use the tool: paste your class list and pick a few names.
  4. Watch the Network list. Nothing appears, because your names are never sent anywhere. The list and the picks stay on your own computer.
